Back to top5 General software questions

Q1 Entries are always automatically displayed in alphabetical order in the Start menu. I would prefer having the most important entries in the first positions in the Start menu. Is it possible to rearrange the sequence?

A1 Entries are always sorted alphabetically - but numbers always precede characters. This means that you must open the File Explorer, go to the directory Windows/Start Menu and tap and hold onto the desired entries until the dropdown menu appears. Choose Rename and add a number in front of the name. Now, this entry is positioned at the beginning of the list.

Q2 All Speed Dial entries, except for the Voicemail entry, suddenly do not appear anymore. What has happened?

A2 Speed Dial entries are linked to current contacts in Pocket Outlook. Removing these contacts causes the linked entries to disappear.

Q3 How can I lock down Xda II so my staff can't accidentally remove applications or files?

A3 Kioskengine by Spb lets you lock a PocketPC, except for only a few applications. Further information may be found at http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/enterprise/devtools/kioskengine.html. It is usually very important for field staff to be able to retrieve their E-mails en route from the company server. Synchrologic offers software which synchronises with the company Mail Server, but also offers the option for software installations or updates via remote-control. It is also possible for an administrator to assign authorisations for the xda centrally. Further information may be found at http://www.synchrologic.com/

Q4 In the older version 2.x of Windows CE the automatic word-completion memorised new entries. Since I have the new operating system (PocketPC 2002) on my Xda II, this does not seem to work anymore. Where can I re-activate this option?

A4 It is not possible to reactivate this option with the new operating system. User-dictionary support is provided by a program called WordLogic. This software works with its own keyboard-design and is able to adopt the existent WinWord user-dictionary. Further information about this program can be found at

Q5 I have created several tasks with arbitrary alarm settings on my PC. After synchronisation with the Xda II, all alarm settings were altered to 8:00 a.m. Why does Active Sync cause these changes?

A5 The reminders for tasks are unchangeably set to 8.00 a.m. on the Pocket PCs. Alternate alarm settings are only possible with the alarm options or the Pocket Calendar.

Q6 My xda turns itself on every night around midnight without any apparent reason. Why?

A6 Every PDA running Windows CE, turns on at midnight in order to synchronise the calendar. If the automatic shut-down is activated the whole process only takes a few minutes and PDA turns off again. This process has been documented by Microsoft and more information is available at

Q7 Midi files are small and is possible to store many of them on the Xda II. Is there such a MIDI Player for Xda II?

A7 Yes, there are Midi Players for the PDA. The basic problem is the following: soundcards in Desktop PCs already have a whole set of instruments integrated. The PDA only has one chip, which is able to play-back Wave files. Subsequently, one must transfer the instruments as WAV files to the PDA and then the tone pitches must be calculated during play-back on the processor - this means, the PDA must operate at full capacity. Beatnik Player for PocketPC is a commercial product. You can download a demo from the internet. PocketMIDI 1.0 is a freeware Midi Player. This Player is offered with approx. 5MB Wave files for the instruments. http://www.clubic.com/t/gen/fl2139.html

Q8 Can voice message be attached to excel file?

A8 This feature is not supported

Q9 Is it possible to use my Xda II as a monitor for a regular PC?

A9 The Xda II has a Terminal Service Client integrated. This lets you operate a Desktop PC with Windows XP Professional by remote control.

Q10 Can I send several contacts at once via Infrared

A10 To choose individual contacts you need to open the keyboard and activate the Strg key; then just tap onto each individual address. Now, tap onto one of the highlighted addresses until the context menu opens. Choose Beam contact... and all addresses are transferred to the other PDA.

Q11 What is the difference between work setting and internet setting?

A11 With work settings you can setup a VPN service

Q12 I wanted to adjust the Start menu by removing/display other programmes. When adding, an error appeared that only 9 entries are possible, though 11 entries appear in the Start menu. Why?

A12 This limitation of 9 entries exists under Start > Settings > Menus. However, if you copy the desired programmes into the directory My device > Windows > Start menu, they also appear in the Start menu even if there are more than 9 entries. If you have more than 11 entries in this directory, two scroll bars appear in the Start menu, since not all entries can be listed at the same time.

Q13 Why is there still a program written in the programs dialog box although I removed it through the Remove Programs utility

A13 You need to delete the file from the program dialog box by performing the following steps: Go to Start > Programs > File Explorer > My Device > Windows > Start Menu > Programs. From here, tap on the program icon that you want to delete and click on delete.

Q14 The Pocket PC File Explorer does not show all files. Why?

A14 Normally File Explorer does not show hidden or system files. This can be adjusted relatively easily. Simply scroll to the bottom of the File Explorer. Click and hold on the empty area until the menu appears. There you can choose the option show all files. However, this may cause a very slow display formation for directories with many files (i.e. /Windows). You can turn off this option the same way. This feature functions with all Pocket PCs 2002 and Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition.

Q15 After auto-config, the GPRS option shows a baud rate of 19200 and cannot be changed. Is this correct or can I adjust to a higher speed?

A15 The value cannot be changed. But this is not necessary, since it is not used by the GPRS-implementation - GPRS automatically transmits at the highest speed.

Q16 What is the difference between Letter Recogniser and Block Recogniser?

A16 Block Recogniser is for former PALM Graffiti users. Letter Recogniser identifies each individually written letter of the alphabet.

A23 Strike the keypad anywhere from right to left and it deletes the last character entered

Q24 How can I autorun applications at Startup on Xda II?

A24 This requires an SD card. Create a folder on the SD card in the root directory and rename it "2577". Putting a .exe application in this folder, rename the file autorun.exe. On soft-reset, xda will execute autorun.exe and run that application.
